Abstract. John Stuart Mill was born on 20 May 1806 to James and Harriet (Burrow) Mill in Pentonville, London; and died on 7 May 1873 in Avignon. He was educated privately by his father on Benthamite pedagogic principles. At seventeen he joined his father at the East India Company as junior clerk, retiring as Chief Examiner in 1858.
